K2 - Toronto Waterfront

Toronto, Canada | 2001
Master Planning

K2 is a clearly delineated 1 square kilometer urban block along the western edge of the shipping channel. It is an urban metaphor for a new "processor chip" plugged into the board of the existing city fabric. Its primary objective is to hyper-intensify the competitiveness of the city's economic zone. It is a "connective articulation", designed to attract and provide for the wide-ranging needs and programs of the members of the new economy.

K2 is an urban and environmental reclamation strategy which engages various techniques of land remediation. Through the use of biological and mechanical means, including physical, photo-chemical, microbial degradation and plant-growth, sections of land may be healed and new demand on the land can be minimized. "Bio-pods" within the new city block in various scales and applications mediate the balance between land use and impact on the environment. At the centre of this block is a super-scaled "bio-sphere" which reconciles the impact of the commercial and recreational land use.
