The design of the Shengming Zhiyuan Plaza seeks to promote a concept that incorporates a sensitivity to nature while projecting a modern image of bioengineering that remains connected to roots in traditional medicine. Two worlds intertwine at Daxing – the scheme both conceptually and physically juxtaposes the distinct but interrelated territories of past and future, nature and science. The project is thus conceived as an exploration of the relationship between two parallel planes of experience, one that references the traditional past and another that signals a promising future. The ground plane is conserved as the foundation of knowledge by celebrating the history of medicine and culture in China while, fifteen meters above ground, the future is epitomized by the field of science and biotechnology. The elevated structure functions as a new reference point while the vertical elements that connect the layers confirm the references to the legacy of history. The Source of Life Tower exalts the promise of the future. Together these reference points initiate an acclaimed vision of bioengineering and its impact on human life.
